Basic Uses & Description:

Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer is a black, single-component epoxy primer. It incorporates state of the art, water based technology to produce an extremely versatile product that penetrates and seals porous substrates. It serves to increase the bond of silicone topcoats to a variety of surfaces. It will also help to “solidify” punky or chalky surfaces. Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer is safe and easy to apply, has a very little odor, and is easy to clean. Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer is designed to penetrate and seal porous substrates to improve the adhesion of Home-Sil RC 32.00 Series Roof Coating. It performs especially well on concrete, wood, fiberglass, steel, galvanized and aluminum surfaces. Although Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer will greatly enhance the adhesion of various topcoats over metal surfaces, it is not designed to add to the corrosion resistance of the system, beyond what the topcoat provides.

Advantages:

1. Adhesion: Penetrates and soaks into porous surfaces, imparting a tenacious chemical and physical bond between the roof substrate and topcoat. It is also effective over damp concrete or wood surfaces.

2. Non-Dusting: Penetrates deeply to eliminate concrete dusting, providing for easy cleanup and minimum maintenance.

3. Deep Penetration: Its low viscosity allows Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer to penetrate into and preserve dense surfaces such as smooth troweled concrete floors, oriented strandboard, fiberglass and various types of metal surfaces.

4. Anti-Spalling: Applied to concrete decks, walkways, industrial areas, etc., Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer will effectively protect against the intrusion of destructive salts, oils, solvents and gasoline. It also prevents spalling and pitting caused by freeze/thaw cycling.

Limitations & Precautions

Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer is a thin, penetrating sealer. It is not designed for use as a surface coating. Do not use over metal under immersion conditions. Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer will freeze and become unusable below 32°F (0°C). Do not ship or store unless protection from freezing is available. Do not apply if conditions will not permit complete cure before rain, dew or freezing temperatures occur. Do not apply in the late afternoon if moisture condensation can appear during the night. Do not apply Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer at temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer may be an irritant to skin. Avoid breathing of vapor or spray mist. Approved MSHA/NIOSH chemical cartridge respirator must be worn by applicator. Avoid contact with eyes and skin.

Preparation
A. Membrane Cleaning
1. All surfaces must be clean and free of any dirt, oil, grease, soapy films, surface chemicals or other foreign contaminants.
2. Slightly damp surfaces will not affect the performance of Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer, provided there is no standing water or frost.
3. New concrete should be water-cured in lieu of using a curing compound.
4. Any form of curing compound or release agent on any surface to be sealed with Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer must be completely removed, along with any laitance.
5. Prior to applying Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer, all loose material, dirt and dust must be removed by use of a power vacuum, stiff-bristled broom or compressed air.
6. The following instructions apply to specific types of roofing substrate:
a. CONCRETE:
1) If badly spalled, restore surface to a reasonable condition using cementitious patching or resurfacing compound.
2) Existing concrete must be cleaned using biodegradable chemical cleaner and water.
b. FIBERGLASS: Surface should be scuff-sanded prior to priming.
c. METAL: Surface must be free of oily residue and loose rust.
d. PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES: Should be brush blasted or mechanically abraded to remove the existing finish.
7. Cleaning shall be accomplished using mechanical scrubbers.
8. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water to remove all traces of the chemical cleaner.
9. If general cleaning is not adequate, then surfaces should be cleaned and etched as recommended for new concrete.
10. If surfaces are highly contaminated, or if surfaces are to be subjected to unusual service conditions, consult Progressive Materials, LLC Technical Service Department for recommendations.
Installation
A. Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer may be applied by brush, roller or by airless spray equipment.
B. One coat is usually sufficient for sealing substrates when Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer is used as a primer.
C. When used as a sealer/finish, two coats are required to achieve a uniform sheen.
D. Two coats may also be required when sealing lightweight concrete or other highly porous surfaces.
E. The following are approximate application rates:
Lightweight Concrete: 100 to 150 sq. ft./gal. (2.4 – 3.7 m2/l)
Wood: 300 sq. ft./gallon (7.3 m2/l)
Fiberglass: 300 to 400 sq. ft./gallon (7.3- 9.8 m2/l)
Metal: 300 to 400 sq. ft./gallon (7.3 – 9.8 m2/l)
Notes
A. Thin as necessary with water to achieve adequate penetration of the surface being sealed.
B. When used as a sealer/finish apply a second coat of Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer at approximately 50% greater coverage rate than those listed above.
C. When used as a primer on exterior applications, Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer should be top coated within 48 hours to ensure optimum bonding characteristics.
D. Do not permit Home-Sil RP 1.1 Epoxy Primer to puddle or “glaze” over on top of the substrate.
E. Allow to thoroughly dry prior to applying top coat.
F. On interior applications, the dry time is dependent on the ability of the water to evaporate from the film.
1. Use fans to generate maximum air movement.
G. Covered tanks and vessels may require a dehumidification unit to accelerate the dry time.
H. Store at temperatures between 50°F and 100°F (10°C and 38°C); do not open containers until ready to use the material.

What coverage rate should I use for RP 1.1?
This primer should be applied at different rates depending on the substrate. Lightweight Concrete: 1 gallon/100 sq. ft. Wood: 1 Gallon/300 sq. ft. Fiberglass: 1 gallon/350 sq. ft. Metal: 1 gallon/350 sq. ft.

How should I apply this material?
RP 1.1 may be applied by brush, roller or by airless spray equipment. Airless spray equipment is the preferred method. Any airless spray equipment capable of 1,000 psi (6,980 kpa) and 1⁄2 gallon per minute (1.9 l/minute) delivery can be used. A reversible, self-cleaning spray tip with an orifice size of .015″ to .027″ (.4 mm to .7 mm) and a minimum 40-degree fan angle is recommended.

Does this product have a UL approval rating?
All of our products are UL rated when installed on a non-combustible surface.

Which surface is this primer best for?
RP 1.1 is designed for use over concrete, wood, fiberglass, steel, galvanized and aluminum surfaces, and metal.

How should I clean up afterwards?
Use normal precautions to avoid getting the product on your skin (wear long pants, socks, long sleeves, and work gloves). If you do get product on your skin, you can scrub it off with soap and water. Product will not come out of clothing or shoes. Clean any tools and equipment after application with 100% mineral spirits and a rag.

How do I check that I am applying at the correct coverage rate?
We have mil gauges available to check your coverage thickness while you are working.

How long should the material sit before being walked on?
Most of our products cure in less than 24 hours, but to be safe you should wait 24 hours before walking or placing equipment on the freshly applied product. This rule also applies to adding a second coat.
